International Understanding with International Sound

The second edition of the InDUStrial project brings together artists from Düsseldorf and its Ukrainian twin city, Chernivtsi.

The basic idea of InDUStrial is that industrial companies open their premises to artists who are inspired to create new compositions by the sounds of the factory halls and machines. The successful first edition was released on vinyl in local record stores in October 2023 and was visually accompanied by Düsseldorf photographers. The unusual project was recently presented at the 'Beyond Tellerrand' event series in Düsseldorf and at the Düsseldorf Jonges' home evening. There was even a portrait on Dutch television in June as part of the documentary series "Theo". The organisation of the second edition is now in full swing, with Lord Mayor Dr Stephan Keller as patron. The special feature of this year's event is that it will be a long-term, cross-border exchange between Düsseldorf and the Ukrainian twin city of Czernowitz, which lies close to the Romanian border. The aim is to immortalise the industrial sounds of the two cities on a double vinyl and, in a second step, to organise concerts and photo exhibitions. "We are in regular contact with the deputy mayor of Czernowitz. Several musicians and photographers have already expressed interest," says Carsten Siewert, one of the project managers. Some of the artists from the first edition will be back in Düsseldorf. "But musicians of all genres and photographers are still welcome to apply. We would also be delighted to hear from companies that are interested in being part of this unique experiment. •
