Coffee culture
DIVERSE, DISTINCTIVE AND SUSTAINABLE
Düsseldorf is home to a variety of coffee houses. And more are springing up all the time: the number of trendy coffee locations that attract visitors at any time of day with their cosy ambience, tasty delights and cultural diversity keeps growing. In the city centre, but also in other boroughs. The focus of interest lies not only on individual roasts that give each coffee its own, distinctive flavour. The origin of the beans is also crucial: sustainability and fair trade were never as important to coffee connoisseurs as they are today. Four coffee houses from Düsseldorf present their concepts!
Rösterei Vier
In business since: 2016
Number of employees: 30 employees
Selection: In addition to an extensive selection of espresso and filter coffee beans, we also offer tea and Terrior: these are products that are not directly associated with either coffee or tea and come from our partners. For example, Hulikere pepper from India. Our shop offers equipment like grinders and bean containers.
Origin of beans: We source our beans from South and Central America, Africa and Asia. Countries of origin include Indonesia, Colombia, Panama and Costa Rica.
Special features: We travel to the producers and have long-standing partnerships with more than 18 different cooperatives and farmers. We rely on “direct trade” and pay the producers prices that are higher than the fair trade value. We also support them in financing machinery and processing equipment.
Philosophy: We want to appeal to both traditional coffee aficionados and coffee nerds and give them an understanding of the origin of the products: Where do they come from, who is behind the production? Through direct trade, we create access to information and promote interest in coffee culture. •

SAMYJU
In business since: May 2018 in Meerbusch-Büderich, new in KII Düsseldorf since December 2021.
Number of employees: 7 full-time employees, 8 temporary employees
Selection: We develop and produce our coffee and espresso varieties in our in-house coffee roastery in Meerbusch. In addition, there are coffee bags packed with our different coffee varieties, which can be brewed by hand and, above all, be flexibly used when travelling.
Origin of beans: The beans come from different countries, for example Peru and Ethiopia. We purposely make sure to trade a lot directly and are in close contact with some farmers. Sustainability is an important part of our philosophy: from the coffee beans to resource-saving packaging to our food range, which we source from regional partners. In addition, we initiate social projects.
Special features: We pass on our passion for coffee in coffee roasting seminars and barista courses.
Philosophy: Our credo is “Coffee but with a good purpose”. Sustainability is not a trend for us, but a fundamental part of our brand DNA. •

Origin of beans: We source our green coffee through various traders who are in close contact with the farmers. We hope to continue our annual trips to the farms after COVID-19. Also to better understand the impact of the pandemic on the ground. Some of our coffees are UTZ and RFA certified. We support various projects, for example to protect NASA reserves in Colombia.
Special features: Every coffee machine produces a different taste experience. We want to find the right beans together with the customer. We also help with adjusting the grinder and coffee machine so that the result is perfect.
